I am excited to look at our plan and see its strengths however also looking at the possibility that it isn’t accessible for all learners and if it is possible to adapt it in any way to make it more inclusive.

Storytelling can be a tool for nurturing creativity and self-expression in students, and modern technology has opened up exciting avenues for storytelling in the digital age. In our group we decided to use Canva templates for brainstorming elements of a story as it offers a visually appealing and user-friendly platform. However, it’s essential to recognize that this approach may present barriers to students with diverse abilities, potentially limiting their opportunities for success. By acknowledging these hurdles and making thoughtful adjustments, it is hopeful that we can create an inclusive learning environment that caters to every student.

One of the primary barriers to student success when using Canva templates for storytelling lies in its reliance on visual elements. Students with visual impairments or learning disabilities might find it challenging to engage with the content fully. To overcome this obstacle, educators can provide alternative formats like tactile graphics or audio descriptions. Additionally, incorporating descriptive text alongside visual elements in the template can make it more accessible to diverse learners.

Furthermore, the use of complex language and vocabulary in Canva templates may deter students with language or cognitive disabilities. Simplifying the text without compromising the focus of the exercise can promote inclusivity. We could offer a range of vocabulary options, allowing students to choose words that best suit their abilities and level of comprehension.

Another significant challenge for students with diverse abilities is the rigid structure of Canva templates, which might stifle their creativity and limit unique storytelling. Allowing flexibility in the template and encouraging students to modify it according to their preferences fosters a sense of ownership. We could offer various template options, including blank ones, to cater to individual learning needs.

Moreover, collaboration can play a pivotal role in reducing barriers. Pairing students with diverse abilities with their peers in group activities enables them to benefit from each other’s strengths. Encouraging open communication and empathy within the classroom cultivates an inclusive environment where all students feel valued and supported.

Thinking about all of these elements, Canva templates are a valuable resource for enhancing storytelling skills, but they must be adapted to create an inclusive space for students with diverse abilities. By recognizing barriers like visual limitations, language complexities, rigid structures and fostering collaboration, we can empower every student to reach their full potential.
